Why Preparation Matters

Bed bugs are masters of hiding. They can squeeze into spaces thinner than a credit card — including mattress seams, baseboard gaps, electrical outlets, picture frames, and furniture joints. A professional treatment is designed to reach these hiding spots, but it can only work if the bugs can be exposed to the heat or insecticide.

Clutter, clothing on the floor, and items blocking baseboards all create barriers that protect bed bugs from treatment. In fact, failed bed bug treatments are most often caused by inadequate preparation, not by the treatment method itself.

Preparation for Heat Treatment

Heat treatment works by raising the temperature in the treated area to 50–60°C (120–140°F), which is lethal to bed bugs at all life stages. Because heat can damage certain items, preparation is essential:

DO Remove from the treatment area:

DO Keep in the treatment area:

Preparation Checklist for Heat Treatment:

  1. Remove all items from floors (clutter on the floor blocks airflow)
  2. Pull furniture 6–12 inches away from walls
  3. Empty closets and drawers — leave everything on beds or open surfaces
  4. Remove curtains or pull them away from windows
  5. Take down artwork and wall hangings
  6. Strip beds completely — remove all sheets, blankets, pillowcases
  7. Place temperature-sensitive items (medications, electronics) in a safe, cool area outside the treatment zone
  8. Arrange for pets to be out of the home during treatment and for 2–4 hours afterward until temperatures normalize

Preparation for Chemical Treatment

Chemical treatment involves applying liquid or dust insecticides to baseboards, cracks, crevices, furniture joints, and other bed bug hiding spots. The preparation is different from heat treatment:

Preparation Checklist for Chemical Treatment:

  1. Wash and dry all bedding, clothing, and linens on the hottest setting — heat kills bed bugs and eggs. Dry clean items that can’t be washed.
  2. Move furniture away from walls to expose baseboards and edges for treatment
  3. Empty closets and drawers — place items in sealed plastic bags or on beds (not on the floor)
  4. Vacuum thoroughly — carpets, baseboards, mattress seams, upholstered furniture, and under beds. Dispose of the vacuum bag immediately in a sealed plastic bag outside.
  5. Declutter — remove boxes, papers, and items stored under beds. Clutter provides hiding spots that chemical treatments can’t reach.
  6. Do NOT use any DIY bug bombs or foggers — these scatter bed bugs deeper into walls and make professional treatment less effective.
  7. Do NOT wash or scrub treated areas after application — let the treatment dry and remain undisturbed.
